Crunchy or soft, carne asada or chicken, there’s a taco everyone loves and can celebrate on National Taco Day, Tues, Oct. 7. Here are the places Concordia students and staff love to celebrate.
Holly Murillo, a former graduate education student and current staff member, said she “loves tacos” and likes to participate in Taco Tuesdays. The perfect taco for Murillo is one with “a good sauce and a good tortilla.” Her favorite place to celebrate Taco Tuesdays is The Taco Stand in Costa Mesa, where her go-to order is carne asada tacos.
The Taco Stand is located at 2981 Bristol Street in Costa Mesa, offering a large taco menu that includes vegan and vegetarian options. Tacos are available for prices between $3 and $6 each. They have other specialties like grilled corn on the cob and loaded fries, with nothing on the menu being over $12.
Brandon Schalliol is a senior from Yorba Linda and loves local spots. Schalliol said his favorite taco spot is Sancho’s Tacos down in Newport. This Sancho’s is located at 3014 W Balboa Blvd; however, they have other locations across Orange County in Huntington Beach, Laguna Niguel, and San Clemente.
Sancho’s offers a total of nine different tacos with the option to swap the tortilla for a lettuce wrap. There is everything from steak, carnitas, veggies, and even a surf and turf option, truly checking a box for everyone. If tacos aren’t your thing, they have a lot of other specialties, and Schalliol, while he likes tacos, said, “I actually usually get a Cali burrito.” He said his total “is probably like 12 to 14 bucks.” This is the perfect place to grab a taco or two and head to the beach to catch the sunset for National Taco Day.
Don’t want to take a risk with a new local spot? The tried and true Taco Bell is senior Jerald Bermudez's favorite taco spot. Since 2013, National Taco Day has been celebrated every Oct. 4; however, starting this year, National Taco Day will always fall on the first Tuesday of October, since it is only fitting that a day celebrating tacos is on a Tuesday.
Taco Mesita in Tustin is Timothy Wu’s favorite local taco spot. He is a senior and a Communication Studies major from Irvine who tends to “save tacos for special occasions.” He said his ideal taco is “one that is soft-shelled, has a wheat tortilla, that the meat or pork is very tender, along with having tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and a little bit of oil.” He said his order is “usually about five to seven dollars.” Taco Mesita is located at 765 El Camino Real and offers great taco Tuesday deals, where tacos range from $3-$5, and you can pair them with a $3 margarita.
Celebrating National Taco Day can be a great way to get familiar with the Orange County area and experience some of the Mexican food Southern California is known for. Grab a friend and try some of these favorites.
