CUI Musicians Playing Instruments

Concordia’s Music Department has many exciting music events throughout the fall 2022 semester occurring at multiple venues.

Dr. Jeff Held, Assistant Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and Director of Arts & Instrumental Activities, and Professor Michael Busch, Director of Choral Activities, spoke about the upcoming music events for the 2022-2023 academic year.

The events will take place at venues such as the Borland-Manske Center, Charlie and Ling Zhang Orchestra Hall, Concordia University Irvine Center for Worship and Performing Arts, Campus JAX and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Regarding the upcoming performances, Held said, “While I am excited about all of them, I can highlight the upcoming Concordia Wind Orchestra concert on Nov. 6.  It features Come Sunday, by Omar Thomas.” He added, “This is a really thrilling piece and will probably be a favorite of the whole year. It is based on the gospel sounds of the Hammond B-3 Organ, as used in African-American church services.”

Held spoke on the ways in which music can be a formative experience for students. He said, “In a world where communication is primarily done through short texts and online messages, the opportunity to communicate through musical artistic expression helps us all to communicate nuance and confidence in an artistic mode.”

There are many great reasons to attend upcoming concerts from enjoying good music, hanging out with friends, and supporting one’s peers. Held summed it up best when he said, “Wise, Honorable, CULTIVATED. Learning how to engage with musical art is a richness in living. Now is the time to gain this exposure. Every next time you attend a concert, you will want to hear and learn more.”
