All students are welcomed and encouraged to join Concordia’s intramural program. Intramurals are a free, student-leadership-based program that involves students getting together and competing in different types of sports, such as volleyball, basketball, flag football and soccer. Intramurals work to bring all kinds of students together, whether you are a commuter, freshman, athlete, theater or art student and anything in between.

The first sport to kick off is volleyball, which started on Oct., 14, and will be played every Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 p.m. until midnight in the CU Arena. Teams are composed of a minimum of six players and a maximum of twelve. Volleyball Intramurals will have playoffs, where the first four teams will advance into championship games.

“This is an opportunity for students to get involved in the school and participate in physical activities without having to be in any athletic program,” said Giovanna Castro, an intramural coordinator on ASCUI. The coordinators have the mission to “organize the team schedule, and additionally promote around the school.”

“We have to make sure everything is running fine and safe. Some people take intramurals very seriously,” Castro said. With a focus on health and safety for all participants, this is a way for competitive students to find something they are interested in, but more importantly, have fun.

As it is designed for athletes and non-athletes, there is an integration between students in which they can get to know new people and contribute to activities on campus and student life. “In football, there are teams composed of main sports like swim or lacrosse, but people from other sports or non-athletes join their team,” said Castro.

Intramurals can also be “perfect for freshmen or transfers, not to create only a bond with their team, but to create their friendship group,” said Castro.

The competitive and upbeat environment encourages an inclusive and healthy activity for students.

“The impact of exercising and keeping your body active, helps a lot,” said Castro. All of these qualities of Concordia Intramurals create the opportunity to stay active, get involved, meet new people and have fun with friendly competition.
