Every Monday and Tuesday night until Nov. 28, CUI intramurals will be hosting volleyball games in the CU Arena. Games start at 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. This volleyball season is already underway, but students can still join. If students are interested in playing volleyball, contact the intramural coordinator, Landon McIntire, for the opportunity to play. 

Teams have been made and are competing, but students are still welcome to show up and ask to join a team. They play best of three, with the first two games going to 25 points, and if they split, meaning each team won one game, they play the third to 15 points. Each team will continue to compete until there is an ultimate winner at the end of the season. 

If students have grown up being involved in sports and desire that competition again, intramurals are just the place for Concordia students. McIntire said, “I've always loved playing sports with friends growing up, and playing intramural sports here at Concordia reminded me of that!” 

McIntire is in charge of organizing teams, finding awesome referees, and setting up the game field or court. McIntire said, “My favorite part of intramural volleyball is the energy and atmosphere in the gym. It's awesome to see people so excited to play, make friends and build connections over a game of volleyball.” 

Matthew Simon, freshman, said, “The energy in the gym is fantastic. Everybody has a smile on their face, having a great time regardless of the results. And it does get competitive since nobody really wants to lose. So it really is a combination of fun but competitive play.” 

Josh Griffith, senior, shared a similar appreciation for the balance of competition and camaraderie that intramural sports inspire. “I don’t play sports anymore, so being competitive again is really fun, but it is also a light mood. No one is really going at each other; it is still competitive and fun.” 

Intramurals are very popular among Concordia students and are often a highlight of the week. Simon said, “This is my first year as a student at CUI, and one of the biggest things that I wanted to participate in was intramurals. So, the moment I heard that volleyball was one of the sports that would be played, I was instantly inspired to play because of the sense of fun, competition, and the chance to meet new people.” 

Griffith also shared his experience with intramurals over the years. “I had a buddy of mine who invited me out here two years ago to be on his team. I played in high school and college, so coming out here and being on a team with six people who had never played before and watching them figure out the game and grow was really fun.” 

 

Intramurals is a great way to meet new people and connect with the Concordia community, even if students don’t want to participate. McIntire said, “If they aren't interested in playing, there are lots of people who show up to support and watch!” 

For those who are hesitant to join because they are worried about their skill level, Simon gave a word of encouragement: “One of the things I would recommend for everybody is that, even if you don’t play the sport, you should still play and meet a bunch of fantastic people.” 

The next volleyball intramural nights will be Oct. 30 and 31 at 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Tuesdays games will be Halloween themed and the best dressed team will get $150 gift card!
