Peer Health Coordinators, Reagan Wagner and Hannah Walker,  planned a stunning Wellness Week for students. The event took place Mon., Sept. 27 through Fri., Oct. 1, and included a variety of events, an opportunity to meet other people and a chance for students to focus on their health.

Wagner said, “My favorite event was open mic night. This was an event that peer health coordinators had not done in the past. It was a great turnout of more than 80 people. Some came out to open mic night that did not sign up for other events during Wellness Week. It was a great time for everyone.”

Jaylen Newman, a senior, said, “My favorite parts of Wellness Week were the open mic night and the free stickers.”

“The main way I saw Wellness Week impact students was through students creating new connections with each other. Students had an opportunity to meet people they had not met before,” Wagner said, adding that “students were able to gain something different from each other throughout Wellness Week and the different events that were offered. Open mic night was a great way to get people to express themselves. Students also had the chance to go to the gym for the first time.”

Newman said, “I went to the open mic night. It was fun to see people expressing themselves and it was relaxing to me to hear people sing and read poetry. This gave both the listener and the reader time to relax and just to be in the moment.”

Wagner said, “There was a variety of impact it had on students. Wellness Week introduced people to things they had not thought about being a part of before. It also introduced people to things they did not know existed on campus.” Newman added, “I liked seeing how Wellness Week let people express themselves. There was a noticeable difference in how people acted during the event, and to me, they seemed generally happier.”

During the month of October there will be campus events centered around Breast Cancer Awareness. “On Wednesdays, wear pink! You can buy a pink shirt at the table outside the cafeteria during lunch or dinner on Wednesdays. You can also buy your shirt at the front desk in the Center of Student Leadership Development building (CSLD, located next to the bookstore.) Proceeds go to a research foundation for breast cancer,” Wagner said.

Peer health coordinators host many different events throughout the year, including Bystander Intervention Training, and midterm and finals stress relief.
