There is something new happening right now! Student Leadership applications are open. There are a variety of positions available for every area of leadership around campus including Resident Assistants (RA), ASCUI student government, International Student Ambassadors (ISA), LEAD, Student Success Mentors (SSM), and Peer Advising Leaders (PAL). Student leadership provides students with the ability to support other students and provide everyone with the best experience here at Concordia.
You get to learn how to be a team player, work with faculty, plan events and be a student role model for the campus. It also helps you gain insights and skills that will benefit you in your future careers after graduation.
Student leadership advisors would love to encourage you to be a part of their student leadership team! Amanda Harris is the advisor of ASCUI and LEAD and would be so happy to have you on either of her teams. “I encourage you to apply for ASCUI (our student government team) because this small group of student leaders gets to advocate for the student body and share those needs, concerns or wants with upper administration. Not only that but, we have a lot of fun together and enjoy growing in our faith, and leadership abilities. This is a great role to help prepare for your future profession,” said Harris.
If student government isn't for you but you still want to plan and lead events on campus, LEAD is a great option! Harris said, “I encourage you to apply for LEAD if you have a passion for planning events or any of our specific groups that make up LEAD: Concordia Cares, Commuter Outreach, Intramurals, Student Activities, and Marketing! Each of these groups are dedicated to specific interests and events. Working in LEAD will provide great programming experience, opportunities to build community and serve. We really are one big happy family!”
The call is also out to recruit Resident Assistants. Alexis Borland is one of the Resident Directors who oversees the Resident Assistant (RA) position and she loves what she does. She wants to invite you to apply for the RA position and shared this statement, “Resident Assistants serve CUI residents faithfully through building community, planning programming, executing emergency response and ensuring that the residential halls are a safe and healthy place to live. RAs each have a hall of students that they support throughout the school year and refer to campus resources. RAs act as a bridge helping their residents get connected to the broader CUI community. RAs receive a free 10-meal plan and an hourly wage! If you love to lead and love people this is the role for you!”
Borland also oversees a new position for The Hunt! Borland explained, “The Hunt Coordinators create a culture of school spirit on campus! As a Hunt Coordinator you will serve as the official face of The Hunt, promoting all events and hyping up the competition to students. In this role you will plan and execute prey days, serve as the official Hunt scorekeeper, design marketing materials and giveaways and plan large events. This role will work closely with athletics to promote attendance at games and oversee the Flight Club student section. We are looking for students who are passionate about school spirit and fun! Hunt coordinators will work 10 hours a week and be paid an hourly wage.”
Another wonderful way to get involved on campus is the abbey west ministry team. Lisa Purcell, the Administrative Assistant to the Campus Pastor shared her insight on joining abbey west. “You might hear the name abbey west and wonder what that is or who it is for, but abbey west is simply the designation for Concordia's university discipleship,” Purcell said, “It is intended for anyone and everyone looking to ask questions of faith, experience God's grace, and engage in discipleship to Jesus. Sometimes a great place to begin is to get connected to one of our small groups or to engage in a service project. If you would be interested in overseeing a small groups ministry, our missions & service ministry, or have a special gift in tech or worship, please consider applying for an abbey west student leader position for the '22-23 academic year.”
There are great opportunities that come with student leadership. Take the time to learn more and apply!
