Concordia’s Theatre Department is giving students the opportunity to take a walk down memory lane and contemplate what they’d do differently if given the chance. From Jan 27. to Jan. 30, CUI’s Theatre Department will be showcasing “Endgame” on the big stage. 

Samuel Beckett's “Endgame,” directed by Dr. Tony Vezner, combines tragedy and comedy in a production you don’t want to miss! 

“Some sort of cataclysm has happened but we don't know what it is. Maybe it's a pandemic, maybe a nuclear war. Four people are sheltered in a basement, perhaps for decades, without internet, TV, or the hope of life outside. So, what do you do when you have nothing but time to kill before you die?” said Vezner, teasing the plot.

Over the past two years, college students have been faced with uncertainty from the pandemic and ever-changing events in the world. “Endgame” holds us by the hand and walks us through the journey of being a pawn in life’s game of chess.

“I think the goal of this play is to see what is at the heart of human nature when you strip away most of the outside sources of hope” according to Vezner.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Where’s the fun in that? Why would anyone want to take themselves through the mental gymnastics of anxiety, and the unknown of what some of us thought was the end of everything as we knew it yet again?

This time, you don’t have to be in the driver’s seat. You can contemplate your next move from the passenger seat of CUI’s Studio Theatre. 

“I'm just excited to see how much these actors grow in the process and to see the innovative design work of our students on stage,” said Vezner. “The highlight has been working with the students on these challenging roles and working with a student designer, Christopher Aceves Jr., who is doing the costumes, hair, and makeup for the show.”

CUI’s Theatre Department is taking the phrase “chess not checkers” to another level with their creative eye and intentional performances.
