The baseball team topped San Marcos on Sat., Feb. 18 ahead of the conference opener in Hawaii against Hawai’i Hilo.

The Golden Eagles beat San Marcos 2-0 after playing them three times in two days. The baseball team was beaten by San Marcos on Feb. 17 and earlier in the day on Feb. 18. They lost 1-6 and 2-6 before their 2-0 win.

The team needed to do something different than the previous games to win against San Marcos. “The team was able to overcome a lot against San Marcos. Overall the team was able to play some solid defense and make the routine plays consistently,” said senior Dante Catalino.

Although there were positives in the series against San Marcos, the Golden Eagles still have work before their conference opener against Hawai’i Hilo today. “The aspect of the game we need to improve on is manufacturing runs without hits. When we run into trouble is when we as a team rely on getting multiple hits to score runs which is a hard thing to do in our sport,” said Catalino.

Ahead of the conference opener, the players on the team considered the team goals as their personal goals. Catalino said, “My personal and team goals are honestly the same. And that is to win games. I don’t care about personal performance as long as the team wins, that’s what it is all about. Winning is fun.”

The culture embedded within the team makes this group competitive. “I think there are always expectations for the team. The expectations are for the team to win games and make playoffs. The culture that has been set here at Concordia is a winning culture. And every team has to live up to those expectations because no one wants to be average, we want to be the best,” said Catalino.

The Golden Eagles are confident in their ability to take on Hawai’i Hilo and Hawaii Pacific during their trip to Hawaii. Last season, the Golden Eagles beat Hawai’i Hilo and Hawaii Pacific six out of the eight games played.

The ability of the baseball team to make the playoffs this year will be more apparent after their Hawaii trip. If they come back victorious and strong, the Golden Eagles will be more prepared to face high-level competition such as Azusa Pacific and Point Loma. If the team returns from Hawaii with losses, they will return to the drawing board to continue improving.

The Golden Eagles return home on Mar. 18 to face Azusa Pacific. Until then, make sure to follow their Instagram page @cuibaseball and make sure to check out cuigoldeneagles.com for stats, scores and news.
