The women’s basketball team extended their winning streak to seven games by defeating Point Loma on Sat., Jan. 14 at home.

The Golden Eagles are having a historic run in conference this season with only one defeat in ten games played. The team is tied for first in conference with Azuza Pacific, who also holds a record of 9-1 in conference.

Graduate student and guard Katie Timmerman described the team by saying, “I’d say this run has been pretty special, and it’s probably one of the longest I’ve been a part of at Concordia, and I have a feeling it’s not done yet.”

To compete for a playoff spot in the conference title, the Golden Eagles needed to have depth in their playing style. “Some factors that have helped have been our depth and our ball movement,”  said Timmerman, adding, “We have a lot of good scorers on our team who can go off on any given night which means opposing teams have to strategize how they want to try and guard us. In addition, by moving the ball around and getting everyone touches it helps to put pressure on the defense to try to guard us for a full 30 seconds.”

Just like any athletic team, the Golden Eagles face their own set of challenges that they have to deal with. Timmerman said, “Common challenges with any contact sport are injuries. We have a couple people banged up here and there but they’ve been pushing through.”

“It is going as expected, if not a little better than expected,” Timmerman continued. “We got to a little bit of a slow start with our first couple games as we figured out how to play together and use all the pieces we have. Since conference [play] started we’ve been flowing and moving as a unit and have been winning as a result,” she said.

With all the success the women’s basketball team is having, they have only one goal in mind, and that is being champions by the end of the season. “Our team goal is to win the PacWest conference and make it to regional playoffs,” said Timmerman.

The Golden Eagles will be on the road for their next three games. The team will return to home court on Wed., Feb 1 to face Chaminade. To continue supporting your Golden Eagles, check out cuigoldeneagles.com and come support them in their next home game!
