It was a hat trick of sorts -- yet not one the competitive men’s and women’s soccer teams hoped for -- in their trip to Hawaii from Oct. 14 to Oct. 19: Winning two games, tying two games and losing two games.

The soccer teams played Chaminade University in their first games in Hawaii. Both teams won their games. The men’s team won 5-2. The women’s team won their game 2-0. The men’s game had a hat trick (a welcomed one, this time!) by Elijah Amadin and two goals by Alex Perez. In the women’s game Layla Comeaux and Carmany Jones both scored a goal.

The rest of the games did not go as planned for the Eagles. The soccer teams tied their second games while being scoreless. In their last games in Hawaii, both teams lost to Hawai’i Hilo. The men lost 2-1 and the women lost 2-0.

Although the Eagles did not win all their games, the teams enjoyed Hawaii. Freshman Koa Markham said, “It was very fun and refreshing to see all the beautiful sights of nature.”

The Hawaii trip helped the team bond and become a tighter circle. “I think our team bonded very well. It is certainly a brotherhood with my teammates. Soccer consumes a big part of our lives but we all understand that life is much bigger than soccer,” said Sophomore Tyler Oakson.

“The memories, relationships, and conversations that we have outside of the field unites us in a way that enhances our performance when we step onto the field,” said Oakson.

When it came to on the field improvements, Oakson found that from his competitive nature it is hard to find one specific thing to improve on. At the same time, Oakson highlighted the preparation. “There is always room for improvement when it comes to preparation,” said Oakson.

After their trip to Hawaii, the men’s and the women’s soccer teams took on Academy of Art on Oct. 23. The men’s team won 4-2. The goals were scored by Perez, Amadin, Luke Ryan and Vincente Flores. The women’s team won 2-0 through the two goals of Sophia Munoz.

After matches against Biola in another PacWest away game, the women’s team return home to face Holy Names on November 6 at 3 p.m. and the men return home to play Dominican on November 4 at 6 p.m. To continue keeping up and supporting our soccer teams follow them on Instagram @cui.mensoccer and @cuiwsoccer.
