The Business Data Analytics Club is a new club on campus, providing students with the opportunity to learn more about the growing field of business data analytics.

The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), states that business data analytics is a  practice where specific “techniques, competencies and procedures are applied” in order to investigate “past and current business data, for the purposes of obtaining insights about a business that can lead to improved decision-making.”

Since the start of COVID-19, both small and large businesses are no strangers to cultural and market volatility. However, with the help of business data analysts, these businesses can gain useful and accurate information about how to grow and keep their businesses afloat.

Senior and president of the Business Data Analytics Club, Owen Milligan, who also serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Courier, founded the club to “provide professional development for students” who have an interest in this new and complex field. Milligan said it’s about “learning and networking.” The club will focus on having guest speakers from the industry and also help students develop difficicult skills “in technologies such as Tableau, Python and SQL.” Milligan hopes that the growth of the club will even aid in the use of data analytics in “existing school projects.”

Senior and vice president of Business Data Analytics Club, Alexander Kitano, said that he got involved when Business and Economics Professor Michael Kinnen got a group of students together “who all had a love of business data analytics.” Kitano said that the goal of everyone in the club is to develop an “increasing mastery in data analysis, visualization tools, and programming languages.”

He also stressed the importance of using what they learn to engage with real-world data sets and settings “across multiple platforms and industries.” Overall, Kitano says the goal of the Business Data Analytics club is to “promote the love of data and how it truly impacts every aspect of the world around us.”

Miligan said that this semester, the club will be inviting three guest speakers. One speaker is a former Enron employee and another a NASA scientist. Milligan also mentioned the first speaker should be joining the club sometime in mid February. He continued that, “Meetings will take place periodically on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m.”If you are interested in joining the Business Data Analytics Club or have any questions about the club, contact Owen Milligan at owen.milligan@eagles.cui.edu.
