The Academic Advising department has many resources available to new students throughout the semester. The academic advisors are there to support students all semester long, allowing students to stay on-track to graduate and grow towards their future vocations.

Academic Advising is a free resource available to all students in need of academic guidance during their undergraduate education. Students are assigned to an advisor based on their major, allowing each advisor to have detailed knowledge of the requirements within each discipline. The advising team guides students through their academic goals, whether it’s figuring out My Degree Works and graduation requirements, setting goals to reach a GPA expectation, or even participating in student success workshops.

Tanya Chavez is one of several academic advisors in the Success Center. Chavez emphasized that many of the resources can be accessed both digitally and inside the office; “The course catalog, 4-year course offerings, master course schedule, and CPW are found online on CUI's website or app and physically at the Student Success Center. By coming in to see their academic advisor, or by looking on our CUI website, students can easily access digital versions of these resources” Chavez said.

Student success workshops are conducted every semester, providing topics from personal growth to academic skills. Chavez coordinates and executes these workshops throughout the semester, and is particularly excited for one that is coming up soon. She said, “One workshop I am very excited about this spring semester is our faculty panel workshop, which will have faculty answering various questions, especially about how to get the most out of office hours.” Information for these workshops can be found on the MyCUI app, on the Student Success Center page or on flyers posted around campus.

Chavez also emphasized that although the advisors are there to help, advisors still count on students to take ownership of their graduation plan and their class registration decisions. “It is the student's responsibility to learn how to navigate CUI's websites and Degree Works systems so that they smoothly transition to graduation. Advisors are there to help answer questions and we love to direct students, but we expect a level of ownership and problem solving from the students we are advising as well,” she said.
