Students donned their business attire and braved a chilly afternoon in the Breezeway on Thurs., Mar. 31 to present their posters for the 2022 President's Academic Showcase. 

Students presented research and findings on a variety of topics; they worked solo or in teams of two, three or four. The poster session enabled students to deliver short recaps of their research followed by Q&As with their audiences. Many students attended the session along with faculty and staff members.

While the topics spanned spiritual, literature, business and more, students in the sciences truly shined as the showcase gave Concordia’s undergraduate researchers the opportunity to present their scientific experiments and primary research.

Adebayo Akinwale, Andy Kapoor, Kailee Dickerson and Khoi Vu worked in a team of four. While coordinating schedules was tough, Kapoor noted that the team approach enabled them to “run the experiment, the process, multiple times.”

Math major Bryce Tondryk and English major Ethan Stinnett focused their research on the James Webb Space Telescope. Looking at the stars enables one to “look into the past,” Tondryk explained. It also provides insight into the star of the universe, “which is awesome!” Tondryk and Stinnett exclaimed in unison.  

Audrey Plechas’ research explored using math to find a winning strategy for Jumbo Pop, which she theorized could be used to make math more exciting to learn for very young students. “Math uncovers the depth” of understanding, Plechas said.

After the poster session, the top five finalists in Tier 1 (juniors and seniors) and the winner of Tier 2 (freshmen and sophomore) gave a presentation on their research in Grimm Hall on Wed. April 6. The winners were announced during chapel on Fri. April 8 and will be featured in The Courier on April 29.

The students competing in the Academic Showcase vyed for cash prizes. Tier 1 awarded $1500 to the first place winner, $1000 to second, $700 to third, and the best Tier 1 poster garnered a $200 prize. Tier 2 awarded $400, $300 and $200 to the top three winners respectively, along with $200 for the next Tier 2 poster.
